Navigation
The land support team at the Ocean Rowing Society (ORS) will track Bhavik's progress across the Atlantic via the Argos satellite tracking system. boat across the Atlantic Ocean. The target is 30 miles per day and goals will be review each week. Detailed information on the boat's course, distance covered per day and location will be transmitted via satellite and processed before being published on the Internet.

Admiralty charts / Pilot charts
Admiralty or Pilot charts provide the current, wind direction and wind speed forcasts for the route. Bhavik will be using the Pilot charts for April, May and June for the route.

Marine Tracking:
The Argos beacon fixed on the boat will transmit the position of the boat to a satellite at regular time intervals. This information will be displayed on the website as a dynamic satellite map.

Garming fixed GPS (Global Positioning System):
This uses a constellation of satellites to fix Bhavik's position down to around five meters. The GPS also provides the course, speed over ground and the distance covered.

Hand held GPS (emergency bag)
Bhavik will also use a smaller but just as effective handheld GPS in the emergency bag in the event the main GPS fails.

Cooke Kingston Sextant

This instrument measures the declination of heavenly bodies such as the sun, moon, planets and stars. Declination means angle above the horizon. The angle is used in conjunction with the exact time of day to give me my position.

Sight reduction tables.

These contain all the corrections for the original measurement from the sextant and refine the figures to give great accuracy.

Magnetic Steering Compass
One mounted on the mast above the cabin, the other on the deck.

Hand Bearing Compass
This is more of a collision avoidance aid rather than a steering compass. When my radar detector alarms, the compass is set on the ship as it appears, and if the bearing of the ship is the same or similar five minutes later and alert call is made on the VHF radio.

Nautical Almanac
This gives me information about the stars I will be using to find my position.
